Health care coverage can be confusing, costly, and – frequently – overwhelming. That’s where The Asclepius Initiative (TAI) comes in. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, and working across the state, we are a nonprofit organization with an important mission: to make health care coverage simpler, less costly, and available to everyone, no matter who they are or where they live.
TAI was founded by Dr. Susan Bornstein, an OBGYN who saw too many patients struggle to get the care they needed. She knew something had to change. “We want to close the gap between what research shows – that people in countries with universal health care coverage have better health at lower cost – and what many people in Kentucky experience – poor health and high costs,” says Dr. Bornstein. Our goal is straightforward: continuous health care coverage from birth until death, not coverage that depends on your job, income, ZIP code, or other random reasons.
At TAI, we believe health care is a human right, not a luxury. Whether you have plenty of money or are barely getting by, whether you live in a big city or a small town, you should be able to get high-quality, affordable care without obstacles such as confusing rules, piles of paperwork, or unexpected costs. We are also committed to fairness. We oppose discrimination in coverage or care, or differences in health outcomes based on race, gender identity, disability, religion, or anything else.
Through education and outreach, TAI helps Kentuckians understand the system we have now, while working to build the one we all deserve.
