January 2026 Newsletter

The Asclepius Initiative’s January 2026 newsletter focuses on what the new year means for health care coverage, and why affordability and stability remain out of reach for too many Kentuckians.

As 2026 begins, health care costs are rising across the system, regardless of where people get their coverage. While the U.S. House of Representatives recently voted to extend enhanced premium tax credits that help keep Marketplace coverage affordable, uncertainty remains as the bill awaits action in the Senate. At the same time, insurers are raising premiums in response to ongoing market instability, creating new financial pressure for families and workers.

TAI continues to hear directly from Kentuckians about how these challenges play out in real life. Our research shows that having health insurance does not always mean being able to get care. People report delaying or avoiding care, skipping medications, waiting months for appointments, or traveling long distances – often because of cost, complexity, or difficulty finding providers.

This month’s newsletter also celebrates an important milestone for TAI. Founder and CEO Dr. Susan Bornstein was named a 2026 Health Care Hero by Louisville Business First and recognized as a Health Equity Champion for her leadership in advancing understanding of health care access and affordability.

In addition, the January newsletter features a health care coverage literacy spotlight to help readers better understand what’s included in their health plan and how to use that information when questions or medical bills arise.

At The Asclepius Initiative, we’re committed to helping people navigate today’s complex health care system while building understanding and support for a more stable approach, one that guarantees affordable, continuous coverage from birth until death.
